90% Recycled Stainless Steel

Most Klean Kanteen products are now made with 90% post-consumer certified recycled stainless steel which is comprised of reclaimed industrial stainless steel equipment, and domestic/daily life products (i.e., kitchen appliances, tableware, etc.). The remaining 10% is “pure” or pre-consumer stainless steel inclusive of scraps from the production of other products.

Do Klean Kanteens have an interior lining?

No, because all Klean Kanteen products are made from high quality, food-grade stainless steel. Since stainless steel is inherently safe for food and beverage contact, no plastic or epoxy linings are necessary, and they are naturally free of BPA, lead and other harmful substances.

What is Klean Coat?

Our Klean Coat® finish (on our bottles with colors and prints) is a clean powder coat that is 4X more durable than our previous paint finish. We used GreenScreen® to score ingredients by their level of safety and ingredients that did not meet our standards for contact with people and the environment were eliminated.

Why aren’t hot beverages recommended with any straw caps?

We caution using hot beverages with our caps with straws, because the steel portion of the straw will become hot to the touch. Also, it’s trickier to regulate the flow of hot contents through a straw.

Do Klean Kanteens Contain BPA/BPF/BPS?

All Klean Kanteen products and coatings are food-grade and non-toxic. They are free of lead, phthalates, and bisphenols (like BPA). Our 18/8 stainless steel means that it is 18% chromium and 8% nickel and the rest carbon steel, no heavy metals. Our flexible components are made of silicone. We test the materials before, during and after manufacturing to ensure content and have third-party testing regularly.

Why do Klean Kanteen Caps have Plastic?

Our goal is to make reusable products appealing for everyday use, so we offer caps made from safe, BPA-free polypropylene (pp#5). These caps are lightweight, smooth and quiet to operate, and meet our high standards for quality, durability, and design. The Wide Loop and TKWide Loop caps are PP #5 on the outside, but an all-stainless interior, so drink contents never touch the plastic.

What Does “Vacuum Insulated” Mean?

To make an Insulated Klean Kanteen, we first construct an inner and outer bottle, which are sealed together and welded shut to be completely airtight. Then the bottle is placed in a high-power vacuum oven which removes all the air from the gap in between the inner and outer bottle. Since there’s nothing to conduct heat across the gap, vacuum insulation is more effective than foam or other common insulating materials like Styrofoam, a derivative of plastic. Vacuum insulation works so well, it is the technology of choice for cryogenic storage tanks and other high-performance insulating vessels. Our vacuum insulated Kanteens can keep your beverages hot or cold for hours.
